PORTLAND — Industrial construction firm Cianbro is expanding outside the Northeast.
The Pittsfield-based firm today announced it has purchased Texas-based Starcon International Inc., which employs 1,500 people and has operations across the country. Starcon provides contractor services to the refining and petrochemical industries.
Cianbro and Starcon entered a marketing alliance in 2009. The companies also collaborated on an expansion project at the Motiva refinery in Texas.
A media release said Starcon will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cianbro.
In a statement, Cianbro Chairman and CEO Peter Vigue praised the Starcon brand but said the company has limited resources. He said acquisition will allow Cianbro, which has a strong East Coast presence, to expand in the Gulf Coast.
“We typically would not do work in these regions because we don’t have the knowledge of that region, we don’t have the relationships and we don’t have the people resources,” said Vigue.
He added, “All of the states where Starcon is presently located are potentially states where we can do the kinds of things that we do.”
Dale Kuntz, Starcon president and chief operating officer, said the acquisition will offer Starcon growth potential and financial stability.
