Saturday’s state individual golf championships at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro were played in cold and windy conditions that made it tough to score well. Besides the winners, though, there were some commendable rounds.
In Class A, Rocco Spizuoco of Deering shot a 77 for second place. Spizuoco was a strong player for the Rams this season. Nate McCue of Brunswick had a 79 to finish fourth.
Matt Packard of Falmouth shot a 79 to finish third in Class B.
Jordan Jones of Wiscasset shot a 75 to tie for second with Ian Gervais of Houlton in Class C, two shots behind winner Seth Sweet of Madison.
Sweet, whose school doesn’t have a golf team, kept his game in shape by playing on the Maine team in the United States Golf Association state team championship last month in California. Sweet, 16, was the youngest player in that tournament by five years. Sweet’s teammates were Ricky Jones and Matt Greenleaf.
“There were a lot of outstanding players in the tournament,” he said.
THE SANFORD football team (3-4) has hopes of sneaking into the playoffs, but the Redskins are also wondering what might have been after routing Kennebunk 38-19 Friday night. The win snapped a four-game losing streak.
“I feel like we’re a better team than having four straight losses,” said Redskins Coach Mike Fallon. “The last two weeks, we’re talking two losses by a total of four points (21-20 to Westbrook, 16-13 to Biddeford).
“That hurts a lot. But the kids kept their heads up. Right now, we’re playing with our backs to the wall.”
Fallon had scouted Kennebunk and knew what to expect.
“We knew we were going to see a very good passing offense, which we saw,” he said.
Kennebunk quarterback Matt Dube completed 18 of 41 passes for 297 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Fellow senior Vann Brazz pulled down 11 of those passes for 175 yards. Ethan Drigotas had six receptions for 108 yards and one TD.
A PREVIEW of the regional boys’ Class C state cross country meet took place Friday at Royal River Park in Yarmouth. Host North Yarmouth Academy won with 30 points, followed by Waynflete (47) and Merriconeag (55). Waynflete’s Abshir Horor held off Merriconeag’s Jack Pierce by two seconds, winning the individual race in 16:52.
The Western Maine regional meet is Saturday at Twin Brook Recreation Area in Cumberland.
FALMOUTH HIGH’S football team is 4-3 after losing to top-ranked Mountain Valley 38-0 on Friday night. The Yachtsmen’s other losses have been to Cape Elizabeth (24-21) and Wells (41-8), also among Western Class B’s top four teams.
When a reporter asked Coach John Fitzsimmons which of those three he thought was the best, his answer was somewhat of a surprise.
“I have the deepest respect for Mountain Valley,” he said. “But I think Wells has an awful lot to like. Balance between the run and passing. (Paul) McDonough at quarterback, he’s a constant threat.
“As you know, Mountain Valley plays with such heart and tradition, you know you’re going down to the wire. I watched the game on film between Mountain Valley and Wells (a 14-6 MV win). So I know it’s a toss-up. But I think Wells has got a lot to offer.”
