Democratic gubernatorial nominee Libby Mitchell today unveiled a six-point plan on energy and the environment in a speech to young professionals in Bangor.
The plan proposes to create a public/private partnership to run natural gas lines to Augusta and Waterville, something Mitchell described as a “bridge” to help reduce the cost of energy while renewable sources are being developed.
Gov. John Baldacci, also a Democrat, proposed to expand the gas line to Augusta in a recent bond package, but funding was removed before final approval.
Among Mitchell’s other proposals is to encourage “aggressive weatherization” in homes and schools, and a four year $100 million investment in the state’s land for Maine’s Future program.
Her plan would have the state guarantee loans to municipalities to “weatherize their schools so money can go back into the classrooms instead of up the chimney,” she said.
