ALFRED — Jason Twardus stated, in August of 2007 after his ex-fiancée, Kelly Gorham, was reported missing that he “absolutely adored” her.
Twardus is on trial for allegedly killing his ex-fiancée, Kelly Gorham.
Gorham, a 30-year-old nursing student who lived in Alfred, was reported missing Aug. 8, 2007, when she did not report for a shift at work at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Gorham’s body was found in Stewartstown, N.H., 180 miles away, on Labor Day weekend that year, strangled and buried in a shallow grave. Her remains were found on property owned by Twardus’ father.
Twardus was arrested Jan. 9, 2009 at his workplace in Greenland, N.H.
On Friday, the fifth day of the trial at York County Superior Court, the jury heard a recording of a police interview with Twardus from Aug. 16, 2007.
Twardus, sounding like he was crying, said he couldn’t imagine hurting Gorham.
“She was the sweetest girl ever. I absolutely adored her,” he told police.
Twardus suggested that an ex-roommate of his who was also a former boyfriend of Gorham could have possibly been involved in Gorham’s disappearance. Twardus said the ex-boyfriend had not treated Gorham well while the two were dating. Twardus said the ex-boyfriend had also made threatening remarks to him.
Twardus admitted to stopping by the side of the road the night of Aug. 6, 2007 near Gorham’s house to urinate and smoke marijuana in the woods.
After police further questioned Twardus about his lack of memory on events that happened prior to Gorham’s disappearance, Twardus said that it was because he had smoked marijuana laced with another drug.
“I was high,” he said.
The trial will continue on Monday at 9 a.m.
