SOUTH PORTLAND – A local man acquitted in a murder trial last year was arrested in Portland this morning after an alleged burglary attempt in South Portland, police said.
Agostino Samson, 25, was in the process of removing items from a family member’s home on Harriet Street when the homeowner returned and caught him in the act, police said. Samson drove away but was found shortly after by Portland police at a home on Riverton Drive.
Portland police surrounded the home and talked Samson into surrendering about 30 minutes later. He was not armed, according to Portland police.
South Portland police charged Samson with attempted burglary and violation of bail. He was sent to Cumberland County Jail, where he remained late today.
Samson was put on trial a year ago for the February 2009 murder of 25-year-old Scott Libby of Raymond.
He was accused of beating Libby with a frying pan and strangling him. Libby’s body was found in his car after the vehicle was apparently parked on a railroad track in Bethel and struck by a train.
A jury acquitted Samson after his attorney argued there was no hard evidence linking him to the crime.
