WELLS — Three against one isn’t generally thought to be a fair fight.

So it was that Wells goalkeeper Amber Rigdon was at a distinct disadvantage as she had one-two-three Greely attackers jabbing at her feet for the ball 9:00 into the extra session in their WMC hockey clash at Warrior Memorial Field, Tuesday.

Despite her best efforts, Rigdon was unable to hold off  Greely’s Ceci Hodgkins as she knocked in the game winner and sending the Warriors to a 3-2 overtime defeat.

Hodgkins, Jess Sawyer, and Kaley Sawyer all stormed the Wells goal crease in search of a rebound, but it was Hodgkins who reached was able to scrape it away from Rigdon’s boot.

By that time, defender Sarah Larmie had motored back into the play, but was unable to reach the ball before it crossed the line.

“The bottom line,” said Warriors coach Kristin Williams, “is that the other girls didn’t get back to help. Amber did what she could do.”

It was the last turn in a game full of them.

The Warriors trailed by a goal in the second minute, led by a goal at halftime, then spent most of the second half locked with Greely in a stalemate.

“I think we had some really strong moments,” said Williams, “and some really weak moments, where we’d start to break down.”

The Warriors’ strongest moments came deep into the first half, when they received goals from Jill Sledzieski and Kaylar Masellas.

Sledzieski’s tally came out of a goal mouth scramble at 14:08.

Masellas netted hers with 4:06 left in the half, of off a penalty corner that she herself had gotten started.

Cutting back toward the net, Masellas picked up a loose ball near the right post and banged it home, giving Wells a 2-1 lead..

However, with just 2:04 gone in the second half, Hodgkins scored her first of the game, knotting the score, 2-2.

“(On) that second goal,” said Williams, “we weren’t ready to play. The girls were standing up, not bending their knees.”

Wells had chances to snap the stalemate, but it was Hodgkins, who settled the matter with her second goal.

The Warriors will take the field again, Saturday, at Old Orchard Beach.
