SOUTH PORTLAND — A $44.2 million borrowing plan for the renovation of South Portland High School goes before the City Council for preliminary approval Monday.
Councilors have not reached a consensus on the figure for the borrowing proposal and the amount could be reduced, according to Mayor Tom Coward. Some councilors argue that the $44.2 million figure is too high.
The City Council must vote on the borrowing plan twice before Sept. 9 in order to meet the printing deadline for the November ballot. The second vote is scheduled for Sept. 8.
The current $47.3 million school proposal is scaled back from a larger plan that voters rejected by a 3-to-1 margin in 2007. That proposal would have required borrowing $56 million.
