UNITY — A Maine environmental college is giving a solar panel that once sat atop the White House to China’s Solar Energy Group, which will place it in a museum in Shendog Province.
Huang Ming, chairman of Himin Solar Energy Group, planned to accept the gift from Unity College today on behalf of the people of China.
The panel is among those that former Jimmy Carter had ordered placed on the White House roof during his presidency. They were removed during Ronald Reagan’s administration.
Unity obtained 40 of the panels from the government and some were placed on the college’s dining hall roof. The panels have reached the end of their useful life but the school has given a number of them to organizations in acknowledgment of their historical value.
