Planetarium events
Southworth Planetarium is offering a number of events next week.
At 7 p.m. Sunday is “Lammas Celestial Poetry Evening,” a session with local poets and writers reading works about nature, love and other disasters. Admission is by donation.
On Monday, there will be an “ABC’s of the Sky” event at 11 a.m., giving children an outer space word for each letter in the alphabet, and at 1 p.m. a show about the science of black holes. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children, students and senior citizens for matinee shows, and $6 for adults and $5 for children for evening astronomy shows.

Cat shelter yard sale
The Homeless Animal Rescue Team, a shelter and adoption center for cats and kittens in Cumberland, is holding its annual yard sale from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The sale has thousands of items to help the shelter with operating funds and veterinary expenses.

Fiddling at the library
Mary Huff, a member of the large Maine fiddle ensemble, will present an evening of music, stories and dance at 6:30 tonight at the library.
Rita Swidrowski, a member of the library’s youth services staff, will give an interpretive reading of a fiddle-themed story, accompanied by Huff.

Cancer center sessions
The Cancer Community Center has 12 networking and support groups.

Food preservation classes
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is hosting workshops on food preservation from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Southern Maine Community College and at the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program in Brunswick.
To register for either workshop, call 780-4205. Either Kate McCarty, program aide, Kathy Savoie, or a master food preserver from the Extension will lead the workshops.

PEAKS ISLAND
Twenty films on elephants
The Peaks Island Library will be screening “Ele-Phantom: Twenty Short Films/Twenty Questions” by Rialto Arts artistic director Miranda Loud at 7 p.m. Thursday in the community building.

A quilt and some history
Judy Richardson is presenting “Lasting Legacy: The Shaping of Peaks Island in the Late 1800s” at 7:30 tonight at the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum, 45 Seashore Ave.
Two years ago, the Fifth Maine Museum acquired a signature quilt bearing the names of 12 Peaks Islanders of the 1870s. Richardson’s presentation addresses questions that arose when the quilt was received.

Wine-glass painting class
Fiddlehead Center for the Arts and Sciences at 25 Shaker Road is hosting a ladies night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday with instructor Jacinda Cotton-Castro teaching wine-glass bisque painting.
Wine goblets provided for painting have a sturdy stem and large cup. The cost of the class is $15 and size is limited to 10 participants.

VNA Home Health & Hospice is offering a monthly grief support meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at North Windham Union Church, 723 Roosevelt Trail.
