BIDDEFORD — Bangor’s Lonnie Hackett rushed for 160 yards and East quarterbacks Eric Theiss and Ronald Turner threw for five touchdowns as the East rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the West, 40-35, in the 21st Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic at Waterhouse Field this evening.
The West, which leads the series 15-6, led 15-0 and 29-20 entering the fourth quarter. But the East dominated the final 15 minutes to secure its fourth victory in the last five games.
Theiss, from Leavitt High in Turner, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brunswick’s Rashon Edgerton on the first play of the fourth quarter. It was the second time the two hooked up for a score, the other a 30-yard touchdown in the first quarter. That brought the East within 29-27.
Turner, from Lewiston, then threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Will Wetherbee of John Bapst (Bangor) that made it 33-29 East. Hackett then scored on a 34-yard run up the middle with 2:19 remaining, with Josh Gaudette’s PAT kick making it 40-29.
The West got a final touchdown by South Portland’s Ryan Curit with 1:34 remaining, but the East recovered the on-side kick to seal the win.
Hackett was named the MVP of the East team. Cape Elizabeth’s Tom Foden was named the MVP of the West.
