PORTLAND — Maietta Construction has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Scarborough-based company said in a statement that its debt load and the lack of work in excavation and construction made the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court necessary. The company said it expects it can return to profitability as the economy improves, more financing becomes available and demand for projects rises.
The company said its profit margin shrunk considerably due to declining sales in the recession and fuel costs that rose dramatically before the recession.
The company said its reorganization plan includes reducing and restructuring its debts and addressing its expenses.
