The Department of Environmental Science at the University of Southern Maine has won a National Science Foundation grant to develop a renewable-energy curriculum that will give students hands-on experience, USM officials announced today.

The $175,000, three-year grant will help develop a certificate program in which students will learn to map wind and solar resources in southern Maine, test energy efficiency and study the production and testing of more sustainable biofuels.

The grant also will help expand USM’s energy research and testing capabilities and provide students with international internship opportunities in energy planning and implementation.

The program will be led by Daniel Martínez, an environmental science professor who came to USM in 2008 to establish an energy teaching and research program after completing a postdoctoral fellowship with the University of Rochester and the AHEAD Energy Corp.
