PORTLAND — Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred early Sunday morning.

Police said the victim whose name is being withheld was stabbed six times near the intersection of Congress and Valley streets.

The man was in a vehicle with three other men, and was taken to an ATM and asked to withdraw money, said Lt. Gary Hutcheson.

After he withdrew the money, the man ran, but was stabbed, Hutcheson said.

A South Portland police cruiser, which was transporting a prisoner to the Cumberland County Jail, came to the man’s rescue. The jail is located near the ATM.

Hutcheson said one of the victim’s attackers suffered a hand wound and had to be treated. He is known to police, but has not been charged as yet.
