SCARBOROUGH – The Scarborough girls stayed perfect Wednesday night.
With grit. And will. And the kind of performance that asks something of everyone on the field.
The top-seeded Red Storm beat No. 3 Gorham 15-14 in overtime to capture the Western Class A girls’ lacrosse title, improving to 14-0 as they head into Saturday’s state championship game against Mt. Ararat, a 10-9 winner over Brunswick.
“That was the scariest game I’ve ever played in,” said Red Storm midfielder Ellie Morin, who scored the winner off a feed in front from Lindsay Hagerman with 1:48 to play in the first half of OT.
“Right before OT, all the captains talked. I said, ‘This doesn’t happen to everyone. We have to give everything and more. We will run faster. We will run harder.’ This feels like the state championship.”
In a game in which every possession, draw, ground ball and pass seemed to matter, the Red Storm came back twice from three-goal deficits — 8-5 in the first half and 12-9 with 15 minutes to play in regulation.
Just 15 seconds into the first half of OT, Kelsey Howard sprinted downfield off the draw, cradled the ball and fired to give the Red Storm a 14-13 lead.
Morin finished Hagerman’s feed with 1:48 to play to make it 15-13.
Gorham’s Kali St. Germain scored her fourth of the game with 1:25 left, making it 15-14.
The Red Storm finished the final half of OT by playing a possession game, finishing with a game-ending ground ball by Molly Corbin that squelched the Rams’ final chance at a shot.
“Gorham played their hearts out,” said Scarborough Coach Marcia Wood. “They can score anytime they get it.”
Wood’s message to her team before OT was straightforward.
“I said you have to dig deep. You can’t walk off this field with regrets. This is not a game you can come back to play. I promise it will be worth it in the end,” she said.
Gorham (12-3) got standout performances from midfielder Mia Rapolla and St. Germain, who each had four goals.
“That was quite a game,” said Gorham Coach Ashley Dyer. “When we got to OT I told them you gave me 100 percent. Now I need 110. They really left it on the field.
“I don’t think anyone could’ve given them a better game than Gorham.”
The Rams led 8-6 at halftime as their transition game created chances on offense.
Scarborough took an early lead on goals by Kat Gadbois and Brittany Ross and held it until Gorham scored four straight to make it 8-5 with 7:49 left in the half.
Hagerman had four goals and midfielders Morin and Ross each scored three. Megan Quirk scored twice, and Howard, Gadbois and Mary Scott each had one goal.
