The Cape Elizabeth boys tennis team is still in the hunt for a state championship. After pulling an upset over No. 4 Mountain Valley in the quarterfinals, the No. 5 Capers knocked off top-seeded Gardner 5-0 in the semifinals on June 7.
In their dominating semifinal win over Gardner, the Capers started out fast and never looked back. Cape’s Matt Gilman got the first point of the match by beating Jared Hornecker 7-5, 3-6, 10-4.
In the second singles match, Cape’s Ross Sherman had no trouble with Gardner’s Brian Jortner, beating him in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Satchel McCarthy clinched the win for the Capers in the No. 3 singles match, also topping Gardner’s Issac Luken in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the Cape team of Ben Morse and Calvin Alden had little difficulty with Gardner’s Travis Mason and Mike Herson, getting past them in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. In the other doubles match, Cape’s John Tranfaglia and Bailey Dittrich beat Joe Coughlan and Jordan Caradona 7-5, 6-1.
The Capers were set to face No. 6 York in the Class B Western regional final on June 9 (the match was played after the Current’s deadline). The winner of the Cape/York match will face either John Bapst or Camden Hills for the state championship on June 12 at 3:45 p.m. at Colby College.
