ATLANTA — The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers today released the final version of Common Core State Standards in English and mathematics for kindergarten through high school.
The recommended standards are a first-time effort to establish national benchmarks for what high school graduates need to know to be prepared for college or careers. The federal government doesn’t prescribe learning standards to states.
Angela Faherty, Maine’s acting education commissioner, praised the new standards, noting that Maine was one of the first states to adopt educational standards in 1997.
Faherty said Maine and the rest of the nation will benefit from the new standards, which stress deeper learning, focused concepts and higher expectations.
“These are not an overhaul of Maine’s already rigorous standards,” Faherty said. “Schools and teachers will have two years after adoption before testing reflects the new standards, so they will have time to adapt their classroom strategies.”
