NEWCASTLE — An 89-year-old Newcastle man was killed Monday afternoon after his lawn tractor landed on top of him.

Lt. Michael Murphy of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department said Edward Lincoln of Bunker Hill Road was mowing his lawn on a large rider mower when he accidentally drove off the edge of a retaining wall.

Lincoln fell about five feet with the tractor landing upside down on top of him. His wife heard the crash and called 911.

Rescue crews had to extricate Lincoln, who was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. He died a short while later.

Murphy said Monday’s accident is the second fatal involving a lawn mower this month in Lincoln County.

Earlier this month, a 92-year-old Bristol man was killed when he lost control of his mower, which rolled on top of him.
