PORTLAND — The School Committee will meet Monday to consider a $109,000 reduction to the proposed $90 million school budget for the coming academic year.
The City Council’s finance committee has asked the School Committee to reduce expenses so property taxes for the combined municipal and school budget would increase less than 1 percent. If school and city officials reduced budgets equally to achieve that goal, the school portion would be about $400,000.
The School Committee will meet at 6 p.m. in Room 209 at City Hall.
The proposed cut would reduce money available to purchase professional services, such as consultants. If approved, the proposed school budget would be $89.9 million.
The council is expected to vote on the school budget on May 3. The budget will go before voters in a May 11 referendum.
