AUGUSTA — Gov. John Baldacci’s spaghetti fundraisers used to help fund his early campaigns. Now he’s doing it to help an agency that provides assistance to Maine’s homeless.
Baldacci’s pasta dinner tonight at the Italian Heritage Center will raise money for the Preble Street Resources Center, which provides hot meals and other services.
Preble Street has been in the news after the Catholic Diocese of Portland pulled money from its Homeless Voices for Justice program because the agency’s board endorsed same-sex marriage. Baldacci says his goal is to show support for Preble Street, not to make a political statement.
Baldacci has donned the apron many times before. In his younger years, he helped out in the family business, Momma Baldacci’s Italian restaurant in Bangor.
