This could become the wettest March on record in southern Maine.
The National Weather Service in Gray is predicting up to 5 inches of rain today and Tuesday, enough to break the previous 9.97-inch record for March in Portland set in 1953. Rainfall this month has already reached 6.71 inches.
The rainfall is due to a series of storms that developed in the Gulf of Mexico.
“They make their way toward us and slow down,” said Michael Cempa, meteorologist.
The weather service has issued a flood warning for southern Maine and along the coast during high tides today and Tuesday.
Weather data for Portland has been recorded since 1861.
