PORTLAND — John Francis Lynch,  79, died at home while in the care of his wife Sandi on Feb. 25 after a long illness.

Born in Bangor on March 7, 1930, he was a son of J. Francis and Catherine (Nichols) Lynch.
 
After graduating from the University of Maine in Orono, he completed dental school at the University of Maryland School Of Dentistry in Baltimore.

In 1957, he opened his dental practice in Portland after serving two years as a Captain in the Army.

He was an avid New England sports fan, and followed all the games with a passion.

He was proud of his Irish heritage, and spent several vacations in Ireland with friends and family.

An enthusiastic rose gardener, he inspired many to follow in his footsteps.

He found great comfort in his faith, and was an active member of St. Patrick’s parish.

He was a devoted husband, loyal provider and beloved father of eight.

He was predeceased by his first wife Helen (Flanagan) Lynch in 2005, one brother, Richard, of Bangor, and one sister, Anne, of Boston.

Surviving are his wife Sandi (Wardwell) Lynch of Portland; his brother, James Lynch of Hampden; eight children, Kathleen Daniels and her husband Bruce of China Village, Joseph Lynch and his wife Martha of Plainfield, N.J., Maureen Robinson and her husband Keith of Brewer, Sean Lynch and his wife Tori of Portland, Patricia O’Brien and her husband Timothy of Northampton, Mass., Erin Rumpf of Kennebunk, Michael Lynch and his wife Deborah of Lyman, Patrick Lynch and his wife Heidi of Hollis; one stepson, Adam Wardwell and his wife Monica of Limerick; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
