Once a year Shaw’s employees, their friends and family members and plenty of supporters hit the ice off Raymond Beach. And then they hit the water.

This year those who turned out for the annual Shaw’s Polar Dip raised nearly $40,000 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program by gathering pledges and then jumping into Sebago Lake.

There to cheer on the dippers, and to get wet himself, was Joshua Conley, the 2010 Strike Out Cancer in Kids Slugger’s Kid. He was joined at the event by his brother, James Conley, and his mother, Martha Conley.

The Conleys had plenty of reason to thank one particular jumper, Mark Shapp, who works at Shaw’s Westbrook location. Shapp single-handedly raised $6,500 for the cause this year — and has raised more than $25,000 by himself over the past five years.

In addition to his fundraising prowess, Shapp also is annually the most recognizable dipper: He always shows up for the event dressed as a penguin.
