PORTLAND – Police are looking for a gold-colored car resembling a Ford Taurus in connection with a drive-by shooting at Pleasant and High streets Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses told police that the car pulled alongside a green Lincoln Continental at the intersection and someone in the gold-colored car fired several shots at the passenger side of the Continental, said Capt. Ted Ross.
The slugs struck the door frame and pierced a window, but nobody was injured, Ross said.
Witnesses said they saw the gunman extend an arm through a window from the back seat and fire the shots.
Both cars then sped from the scene, Ross said.
Police did not release a description of the gun or the attackers.
The people in the Continental immediately called police, and said they did not know who shot at them or why, Ross said. He would not identify the victims, other than to say they are not from Portland.
Drive-by shootings are rare in the city. Police said the last time someone was injured in a drive-by shooting was June 7, 2009, at Pleasant and Center streets, not far from Sunday’s incident.
Police say the earlier case involved rival drug dealers battling for territory, and the victim was an out-of-town dealer who wanted to start selling drugs in Portland.
On Feb. 10, there was a fatal shooting outside an apartment building at the corner of Park Avenue and Weymouth Street. Police say Daudoit Butsitsi shot and killed Serge Mulongo following an earlier dispute.
Ross said he does not believe there is any connection between that shooting and the shots fired Sunday.
Although police interviewed several witnesses Sunday, they are asking anyone else who saw the incident to contact them at 874-8533.
