More than 100 people participated in the Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Dip on Feb. 13, and the reason was a pretty good one: The event at Portland’s East End Beach raised $20,962 for Camp Sunshine in Casco.

According to Camp Sunshine’s Michael Smith, a couple even got engaged before taking the plunge one day before Valentine’s Day.

Camp Sunshine is located on the shore of Sebago Lake and has been a place of support and hope for children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families since 1984. The program is free for all families and includes 24-hour medical and psychological support.

According to the organization’s Web site, $25,000 is enough to pay for 16 families to attend camp.
