Thumbs up to Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach hockey player Tyler Albert. The senior recently scored five goals to lead the Mustangs to an 11-7 win over Sanford. He now has 13 goals in only four games this season.
Thumbs up to all of Santa’s helpers this Christmas who have taken extra efforts to make the season bright for those who do not have the resources for a holiday dinner or gifts. Though the list of those who have been generous to their neighbors in need this year is much too long to list here, we will take the opportunity to recognize a few volunteers this week with the following efforts: The Waterboro Secret Santa, Buxton Toy Box, Kennebunk Fire Dept., Toys for Tots, The Hadiaris family, Bentley’s, Community Harvest, Gov. John Fairfield Elementary School Principal Maureen McMullin and Hannaford Supermarkets, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, all the town health and welfare departments, and the many other organizations and individuals who contributed to those in need this holiday.
Thumbs up to the progress made on plans for a Biddeford-Saco Riverwalk and the opportunities for public input. Construction of an initial phase of the Riverwalk is scheduled for this summer and the development will undoubtedly be a nice addition to the area. Though Biddeford is noted as a “proud city rising where the water falls” few have even seen the falls, as they are obscured by the massive mill buildings downtown. This path will give residents and visitors safe access to one of the natural treasures that helped build these cities.
Thumbs up to the Bon Appetit meal program volunteers in Biddeford, which is marking 20 years of serving free meals to the public, and to all of its donors and supporters. The program has been a staple in the community for all these years, a resource that people know they can lean on in hard times. It is more important now than ever, as volunteers say that the number of patrons ”“ particularly families with children ”“ has increased during the recession.
Thumbs up to the Hannaford supermarket chain for deciding to move into the former Stop ‘n’ Shop location in Kennebunk’s Shops at Long Bank shopping center. Townspeople were glad to finally get a major supermarket in town when Stop ‘n’ Shop came, citing the convenience, and now that role will be filled again. As well, the store will bring back the jobs that were lost and reinvigorate the shopping center, which has been failing without an anchor store. Sebago Brewing will also contribute to the center’s revitalization as it opens in the former Ricetta’s location.
Thumbs up to Carol Cail and Lorraine Masure of Sanford, who were recently recognized by Sanford Kiwanis for their extensive contributions to the community. Cail was named Citizen of the Year for her work at the Sanford Food Pantry, while Masure was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for her years of service to Sanford and Springvale, through multiple organizations. It is people like these women who make a town into a community and hopefully they will inspire others to get involved.
