BRUNSWICK — Joseph S. Fernandes, 82, died Oct. 21 at his home.
Originally from New Bedford, Mass., he was a Brunswick resident for the past 40 years.
From 1945 to 1967 he served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, including a four-year tour aboard the presidential yacht, U.S.S. Williamsburg, for President Harry S. Truman.
In 1960 he received an Army Commendation Medal for his service in Vietnam.
A life member of the Brunswick Elks Lodge, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve Association.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Pierrette; her two children, Claire Adams and her husband Reggie of Arlington, Texas, and Gilles Soucy and his wife Pam of Winthrop; four grandchildren, Genevieve, Crystal, Amy, and Trevor; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
Arrangements are by Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.
