SCARBOROUGH — Thornton Academy can lay claim to many milestones this season in regards to its girls soccer team.

The Trojans have had their best season in school history, as well as a 13-game winning streak, the longest, marking their longest ever.

What they won’t be able to claim in the 2009 season was finishing with an undefeated record.

Scarborough bursted that bubble Tuesday evening as the Red Storm defeated Thornton Academy, 1-0.

Scarborough senior forward Jen Colpitts’ second half goal squashed the hopes of the perfect season for the Golden Trojans, who end their regular season at 12-1-1, and will be the No. 2 seed heading into the Western Maine Class A playoffs.

Colpitts knocked her shot past the diving reach of Thornton Academy goalkeeper Sydney Proctor after receiving a perfect pass from teammate Haley Carignan.

“I started running on it and Haley made a really nice pass to me,” Colpitts said. “I kind of dodged the defender and just shot it in the corner.”

The Trojans played tough defense on the No. 1 seeded Red Storm (13-1) throughout the first half of play, led by Proctor, who broke a school record recording eight shutout performances this year.

Offensively, Thornton Academy was able to keep the ball in Red Storm territory for much of the game, but couldn’t open shots on goalkeeper Jill Deering.

“We played well,” Kohl said. “In games like this, it always comes down to about five plays. They made more plays today than we did.”

Colpitts said the Red Storm knew they were in for a challenge playing against a fellow championship contender in Thornton Academy.

“We knew it was going to be a really big game,” Colpitts said. “Winning on senior night made it that much better. We knew it was great to prepare for playoffs. It was just all around good.”

Kohl said the game would be good practice for the team to prepare for the upcoming playoffs.

“We have to take this as sort of a preperation for the playoffs and use this as a motivation here to go forward. We know this is a place that we could come back and play, hopefully. Obviously we’d love to have that opportunity, but there are a lot of teams in the way, so we have to take care of business before we can even think of that.”

Kohl said there is nothing wrong with having only one loss in the regular season.

“We’re looking forward to the playoffs,” Kohl said. “It’s the best regular season TA has ever had, 12-1-1 is nothing to hang your head about.”

Final heal points and playoff brackets were not released by deadline.
