WESTBROOK – Police arrested a man Sunday who was wanted on a warrant and previously convicted for sex crimes.

According to police, after being approached by an officer around Main Street at about 1 a.m., James Wiebe gave a false name and fled on foot.

Officers chased and caught Wiebe, 43, who police described as a transient. He was charged with failing to provide correct name and date of birth, refusing to submit to arrest and probation violation.

Wiebe was wanted on a warrant charge of probation revocation. He was convicted in 2007 on three counts of possession of sexually explicit material of a minor under 12 years old. He was also convicted in Massachusetts for indecent assault and battery of a person over age 14 and for open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior.
