Civil War
re-enacted
Seventh-grade students at Bonny Eagle Middle School concluded their study of the Civil War with a daylong re-enactment.
This project integrated social studies, science, language arts, dance, music and theater. Songs and writings were studied along with foods, games, and customs of the time. Students learned to dance the Virginia reel, prepare lunch and eat foods that Civil War soldiers would have eaten, such as stews, cooked apples and pumpkins.
The study culminated with the re-enactment of Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. The students were given a demonstration of how a Civil War musket works by teacher Rick Hinds. Teacher Mark Andreasen organized the re-enactment.
