The Windham high school boys tennis team was scheduled to begin its quest for a state championship on Thursday as the top-ranked Eagles faced Kennebunk in a Class A quarterfinal match (played after the Lakes Region Weekly’s deadline).
On June 2, No. 8 Kennebunk topped No. 9 Deering 4-1 in a prelim contest played at Kennebunk.
In the regular season, Windham (12-0) had no trouble with the Rams at home on May 4, winning the match 5-0. Nate Johnson, Dan Crocker and Ryan Johnson all had wins in singles, with Nate Johnson winning his individual match 6-0, 6-0 and Crocker and Ryan Johnson winning their matches by identical scores of 6-1, 6-0.
If the Eagles get by Kennebunk, they would take on the winner of the Westbrook/Cheverus quarterfinal at home on June 6. The Eagles beat Westbrook 5-0 on the road on May 11 and they defeated Cheverus 4-1 at home on May 22.
On the girls side, the No. 4 Eagles also had a home match on Thursday, as they were scheduled to face No. 5 McAuley in a Class A quarterfinal contest. The Eagles (9-3) lost to McAuley 5-0 at home on May 15.
