SOUTH PORTLAND — Diane Prescott Onos, 71, died at home surrounded by family on May 18.
She was born on Jan. 25, 1938, in Madison, N.H., the daughter of Martin and Helen Marguerite Prescott.
She was a graduate of Lynn English High School in Lynn, Mass.
In 1958, she married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Onos, and 10 years later they moved their family to Maine.
Over the years, she worked for the South Portland schools and for Maine Audubon Society, but she considered raising her family to be the most important work of her life.
Her children and grandchildren were an immense source of pride and she reveled in every moment she spent with them.
She took many memorable trips with her family and husband, including cruises, cross country trips and time in Hawaii, but she always enjoyed returning home to family and the beautiful gardens she created.
She had many skills, from quilting, gardening, refinishing a table, to fixing a leaky faucet.
In recent years, she was an active volunteer with the South Portland Public Library and the South Portland Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gerard Onos of South Portland; four children, Michael and his fiance LuAnn of East Bridgewater, Mass., David and his wife Kate of Brunswick, Steven and his wife Connie of South Portland, Kathryn and her husband Ed DiPhilippo of South Portland; nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Kristen, Hannah, Izaak, Abby, and Sydney Onos, Josie, Jenny, and Tommy DiPhilippo; and two great-grandchildren.
