PORTLAND — Alicia J. McCarthy, 95, formerly of South Portland, died May 9 at Seventy-Five State Street with family by her side.
She was born in Portland on June 11, 1913, the daughter of John W. and Catherine (Fitzpatrick) Silke.
After graduating from Cathedral High School in 1931, she worked at Kresge’s Department Store for several years.
On July 18, 1938, she married John McCarthy.
She and her husband later became houseparents at the Maine Youth Center for juvenile offenders, which she continued until her retirement.
An avid golfer, she was an active member of the Willowdale Golf Course and attended “Ladies Day” every Thursday.
She volunteered for Catholic Charities and for the Holy Innocence Home in Portland.
She was predeceased by her husband John in 1986 and daughter Karen Coyne in 1989.
She is survived by her four daughters, Alicia Coyne of Portland, Nancy McCarthy-Marsden and her husband Joel of Cape Elizabeth, Mary Jo Heal and her husband Durmont of South Portland, and Michele Nee and her husband Daniel of South Portland; grandchildren, Michael, Tom, and Christopher Coyne, John Coyne, Kate Mortero, Kevin Marsden, Kim Stiver, Brian, Nicole, and Colleen Heal, and Caitlan Nee; 14 great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
Donations may be made to Cathedral Grammar School, 307 Congress St., Portland.
