BRUNSWICK — Frances M. “Fran” Nicita, 88, died May 3.
She was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., Jan. 13, 1921, a daughter of Mary Cognato and Domenic Scapolito.
She graduated from local schools and The College of New Rochelle.
On March 7, 1942, she married Charles Nicita in Mount Vernon, N.Y.
After raising two sons, she shared her love of reading as a children’s librarian at Larchmont Public Library in New York for 20 years.
In 1984, she and her husband moved to Brunswick to be closer to her son’s family. An active walker, she frequently walked the Meadowbrook neighborhood with a radio glued to one ear, listening to Sinatra and music from the 1940s.
She held a lifelong interest in politics and was a member of the League of Women Voters. Additionally, she volunteered at Mid Coast Hospital, Bowdoin Art Museum and Curtis Memorial Library.
She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed caring for her five local grandchildren. She also frequently visited her son and his family in California, joining them on trips to Italy.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Nicita in 2005, sisters, Mary and Evelyn, and her brother, George.
Survivors include two sons, C. Richard Nicita and his wife Paula Wagner of Beverly Hills, Calif., and William F. Nicita and his wife Helen Follansbee Nicita of Brunswick; seven grandchildren, Kate, Travis, Wesley, Juliet, Sara, Jesse and Zachary Nicita; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at 3 p.m., May 8 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick.
