PORTLAND — Edmund Bennett Gomes Sr., 88, died on April 23 surrounded by family after battling cancer.
He was born in Portland, April 21, 1921, the son of Anthony B. and Marion (Machado) Mitchell Gomes.
In 1939, he graduated from Portland High School. Two years later, he married Mary G. Farrell of Portland. After her death in 1975, he married Elizabeth O’Brien Currier in 1980.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked for Pocahontas Fuel Co., Portland Pipe Line and finally as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service before retiring in 1984.
The highlight of his postal career was using his boat to deliver the mail to his friends and neighbors on Little and Great Diamond Islands.
A longtime summer resident of Great Diamond Island, he had a deep love for the Casco Bay Islands. He served on boards and held offices of the Diamond Island Association and Casco Bay Island Development Association.
A gentle and friendly man, he enjoyed helping others and spent time volunteering at the Barron Center. His interests included researching his genealogy, traveling with his wife and sharing his love of nature with his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife Mary in 1975, brothers, Anthony and Arnold Gomes and sisters, Constance Gomes, Elizabeth G. Vessey and Dorothea Smith Mulkern.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Currier Gomes; son Edmund Jr., his wife Joan and daughter Crystal of Saco; son Joseph and his children David, Rachel and Neal of Windham; daughter Jeanne Fenton, her husband Jim and children Gabriella and Jimmy of Cumberland; stepchildren, Paul Currier of Portland and Clare Currier of South Portland; sister Barbara Black of Gulfport, Fla; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 South Broadway, South Portland.
