SPHS jazz ensemble
wins first place
BOSTON — The South Portland High School jazz ensemble earned first place in their division at the Berklee Jazz Fest held at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Two students earning individual awards in the division were Albie Gingrich, Oustanding Performer and Blake Hawley, Distinguished Performer.
Jazz ensemble members performing at Berklee were Ben Fox, Hana Roderick, Chad Macleod, Sam Ouellette, Jenny Fletcher, Ryan Clancy, Rachel Garneau, Eric Quinn, Alex Roy, Albie Gingrich, Maggie Solomon, Joey Hendricks, Dillon Demille, Matt Brannen, Matt LaBerge, Laura Patriquin, Hannah Huggins, Eric Landau,Jamie Arn, Matt Clement, Will Carter and Blake Hawley. Band director Craig Skeffington led the ensemble.
Swords earns Youth
Service Award
PORTLAND — Liam Swords, son of Dr. Michael Swords and Dr. Elizabeth Flannery of Scarborough, was awarded the Youth Service Award for Cheverus High School by the Portland Rotary Club in recognition of his community service.
Swords received a scholarship along with the award and a donation was made in his name to local nonprofit Safe Passage.
Scarborough debaters
win state championship
SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough High School Debate Team won its fourth consecutive State Student Congress Championship at Brunswick High School.
In the Senate, Jeremy Carter earned Most Outstanding Speaker and Amanda Ek earned Outstanding Speaker.
In the House, Katie Flynn earned Most Outstanding Speaker and David Bibeau, Roscoe Thomas, and Seth Albert earned Outstanding Speaker awards.
Becca Carifio earned the Most Outstanding Speaker award as first place State Champion in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
The team is coached by English teacher Mr. Gerry Hebert.
CEHS alumni directory
project underway
CAPE ELIZABETH — Cape Elizabeth High School superintendent Alan Hawkins and representatives from the Cape Elizabeth Educational Foundation, the school board, and community are working together to produce a Cape Elizabeth High School alumni directory.
Harris Connect, LLC, will also be helping the group find and update alumni profiles in the hopes of helping reconnect former friends and classmates of CEHS.
South Portland High School student Allie Stack, pictured above, was selected by a team of professional jurors for the Scholastic Art Award for 2009. She was awarded a Silver Key for her portfolio, a Gold Key for her block study, and a Gold Key for her owl pendant.
