Westbrook native leads Huskies
Anthony D’Alfonso of Westbrook, who spent last summer with the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, is off to a hot start for the University of Southern Maine this spring.
D’Alfonso, a senior at USM, who is hitting .440 with seven homers and 43 RBIs this spring, is a big part of the eighth-ranked Huskies’ 20-3 record this spring.
On Saturday, D’Alfonso had five hits, including two home runs, and six RBIs to lead USM to a doubleheader sweep of Keene State College by scores of 11-7 and 12-0. In the opening game, D’Alfonso went 3 for 4 with a single, double and homer and scored three times. In the nightcap, he was 2 for 4 with a homer and scored twice. D’Alfonso had three RBIs in each game.
On Monday, D’Alfonso was named the Little East Conference Player of the week.
D’Alfonso batted .536 (15 for 28) in six games with nine runs scored, two doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI. He had 29 total bases and a 1.036 slugging percentage.
In three Little East Conference games, he went 9-for-14 (.643) with three homers and 11 RBI. The 2008 first team All-American went 4-for-6 with a homer and five RBI against the University of Massachusetts Boston, then came back the next day to play a big role in the Huskies’ doubleheader sweep of Keene State College.
Monks baseball team has local flavor
Two athletes with local connections are taking the field for the St. Joseph’s College baseball team this spring.
Junior pitcher Andrew Kierstead of Westbrook, junior outfielder Craig Woodbrey of Gorham and freshman catcher Jon Dahms are members of the Monks’ squad that has gone 18-9 this spring.
On April 11, Keirstead allowed three hits and one run with four strikeouts over six innings in a 7-1 win over Norwich to improve to 4-1 on the year.
On the season, Keirstead has started five games and pitched 23.2 innings with a 3.80 ERA. He has held batters to a .275 batting average.
Woodbrey has played in 18 games for the Monks this season, starting in 11. He has a .222 batting average with three doubles and a triple and 12 RBIs.
Dahms has played in seven games for the Monks this spring, posting a .333 batting average in nine at-bats. He has one double and one RBI this season.
