South Portland’s DiMatteo leads Niagara to softball win
South Portland’s Julie DiMatteo is continuing her softball career in the shadow of Niagara Falls.
DiMatteo, who wrapped up a standout softball career with the Red Riots last spring, is now pitching for the Niagara University Purple Eagles.
On April 9, DiMatteo posted a complete game victory as the Purple Eagles topped Canisius 6-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. DiMatteo struck out eight while allowing only one run in the win.
DiMatteo only got into trouble once in the game. In the fifth inning, Canisius tied the game with a RBI single, but DiMatteo got two groundball outs with the bases loaded to get Niagara out of the inning.
DiMatteo is 7-4 on the season with a 2.90 ERA. She has thrown four complete games while striking out 49. She has 10 starts and three relief appearances with one save.
South Portland ‘s Clark on Huskies’ lacrosse squad
South Portland High graduate Tim Clark is a member of the University of Southern Maine’s mens lacrosse team this spring.
On April 5, Clark had a big goal in the closing minutes of the Huskies’ game against Western Connecticut to help USM to a 14-12 come-from-behind win.
Clark has played in all 10 of USM’s games this spring, starting five. The sophomore has one goal and four assists for a total of five points.
Three from Scarborough on Huskies’ womens lax team
The University of Southern Maine womens lacrosse team has a strong Scarborough connection as three former members of the Red Storm, senior Caitlin Albert and freshmen Sarah Bonenfant and Brittny Silke, are taking the field for the Huskies this spring.
Albert has started in seven of USM’s nine games this season. She has scored 16 goals and dished out 12 assists. Bonenfant has also started seven games, scoring 10 goals with three assists. Silke has started six games this season, scoring one goal.
