Westbrook police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who jumped the curb on Cumberland Street, hitting a man standing outside of the Mill Side Tavern Friday.

Video footage from a nearby business shows what police called a “dramatic collision” that slightly injured Kevin Peterson just before midnight Friday.

Police say they were surprised he was not killed.

“I didn’t even see it coming,” said Peterson, who said he was hit from behind and only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Police identified the truck as a maroon or dark-colored Chevy S-10.

They said minutes before the crash, Peterson and other witnesses saw a man and two women sitting in the truck on Cumberland Street.

One of the two women, they said, punched the male driver and then both women got out of the truck and walked toward Brown Street.

The driver then went around the traffic circle at Rite Aid and came back down Cumberland Street. The truck went up onto the sidewalk in what police said looked like a deliberate attempt to injure the pedestrians on the sidewalk.

It then sped off.

Police ask anyone with information on the truck or driver to call the Westbrook Police Department at 854-0644, ext. 1, or the tip line at 591-8117.
