McCue on dean’s list
Miranda McCue was named to the dean’s list at Ithaca College’s School of Humanities and Sciences in Ithaca, N.Y., for the fall semester.
McCue is the daughter of William and Alison McCue of Gorham.
Scholarship essays sought
The Gorham Garden Club is now accepting applications for its Merit Scholarship.
To be eligible, applicants must have been a Gorham resident for the last two years. They must be either a high school senior or currently enrolled in a post-secondary school and planning to major in plant and soil science, environmental studies, botany, ecology, forestry, wildlife management or related fields.
Applicants are required to submit essays about themselves, their background and why they are interested in their chosen field. Each essay should be typed, not to exceed two pages and include a full name, telephone number, and mail and e-mail addresses.
Essays will be judged on content, form and clarity of expression. The scholarship, which will be at least $300, will be paid directly to the school in which the selected student is enrolled and after it has been established that the student is in good standing and enrolled for the next semester.
Entries are to be sent by June 1 to Scholarship Chairman, Gorham Garden Club, 20 Carll Lane, Gorham, 04038-2309.
Cunningham recognized
Lauren Cunningham recently received the Principal’s Award for Gorham High School from the Maine Principals’ Association.
A congratulatory message on the high school’s Web site said the award is in “recognition of Lauren’s academic achievement and school citizenship. She is an outstanding student and leader here at GHS.”
Cunningham holds numerous leadership positions in multiple student organizations. The message said Cunningham continues to be a kind person to all students and staff.
GHS students earn writing awards
Emily Southard and Bailey O’Brien each recently received honorable mention in a writing contest for high school juniors sponsored by the Woman’s Literary Union of Portland.
Southard and O’Brien each received $100 at an awards luncheon on March 26. The contest topic was “Dependence versus independence.”
‘Evening of Music’ at church
The Cressey Road United Methodist Church handbell choir will present its second annual “Evening of Music” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17, at the church, 81 Cressey Road.
A choir fundraiser, the concert will also feature other church musical groups. Admission is free but a good will offering will be taken.

Goodman to speak at USM graduation
Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe columnist Ellen Goodman will speak at the University of Southern Maine’s 129th commencement.
Goodman will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters at the ceremony on Saturday, May 16, in the Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland.
Bowling to benefit Project Graduation
Gorham High School Project Graduation 2009 will be sponsoring an “extreme bowling” fundraiser at Yankee Lanes in Portland on Tuesday, April 21, from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Tax relief talk
Senate Majority Leader Sen. Phil Bartlett, D-Cumberland County, of Gorham and Rep. Linda Sanborn, D-Gorham, will hold a public meeting with a presentation and question-and-answer period regarding tax relief for citizens.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, in the Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.
U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of Public Debt reported on April 1 that the U.S. public debt was $11,110,654,357,209.33.
