Student musicians win awards
The Westbrook High School Jazz Ensemble took second place in Division I last weekend at the Maine State Jazz Festival in South Portland.
Four of the 77 groups that performed were from Westbrook High. In addition to the second place awarded to the Jazz Ensemble, which is directed by Phil Rich, the Westbrook jazz combo Kinda Blue took a second place, and the Westbrook Jazz Band II took a third place. David Wells directs the jazz combo, and Kyle Smith directs the jazz band.
In each division, five performers received Outstanding Musicianship Awards. In Division I Combo, those awards went to Molly Ridley on piano and Ron Ho on tenor saxophone. In Division I Jazz Ensembles, the awards went to Ridley, Ho and Nate Gowen on drums. And in Division I Second Jazz Bands, they went to Sarah Foster on trombone, Emily Olmstead on alto saxophone and Trevor Driscoll on drums.
The award winning groups will be performing for the public in Westbrook at 7 p.m. Friday, April 10, in the Westbrook High cafeteria, with guest performers trombonist Chris Oberholtzer from the University of Southern Maine School of Music and a cappella group Sidecar Heros, directed by Westbrook’s Patrick McCarthy.

USM dean’s list
The University of Southern Maine has announced that several students from Westbrook were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester:

Forrester on dean’s list
Rose C. Forrester was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. Forrester is a member of the class of 2010.
