The Gorham Planning Board this week delayed a decision on a request by Barbara King of King’s Farm Market to build a pole barn and attached deck at its facility at 44 County Road.
The board is asking King to provide information about storm drainage and groundwater. The board also wants plans upgraded to include location of wells and corners of the proposed structure. Planners did not require a traffic study.
King’s Farm Market is seeking permission for a 60-by-100-foot pole barn and a 40-by-100-foot deck to replace two existing greenhouses. Lisa King, speaking for the market, said the project wouldn’t expand the business or increase the sales area.
Hans Hansen, owner of Hansen’s Farm Market, 74 County Road, asked that King’s request be required to have a permit from the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Agriculture to protect groundwater and the Stroudwater River.
“I’m in favor of a new building, but protect the groundwater at all costs,” said Hansen, a former well driller, and who said he was speaking on behalf of an abutter to King’s.
Paulette Brim of 40 County Road, an abutter who has horses, had concerns about runoff water and asked for a stockade fence. “A fence would make it look better for me,” Brim said.
After the meeting, King said she did not have a cost estimate of the project yet. The market is planning the project despite the down-turned economy.
“We’re cautiously optimistic,” she said about the economy, “It’s going to turn around eventually.”
