CUMBERLAND FORESIDE — Sally Carroll (Holt) Fowler, 88, died Feb. 28 at Piper Shores in Scarborough after a brief illness.
She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 19, 1920, daughter of Benjamin and Nancy (Payson) Holt.
The family moved to New York City, where she attended the Brearley School. In 1943 she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Smith College.
Her family spent summers in Falmouth, where she eventually met her husband of 60 years, Alexander R. “Sandy” Fowler. They lived together for 58 years in an 1800 farmhouse in Cumberland Foreside.
She and her husband loved sailing. Over many years and in many boats, they explored the Atlantic coast from the Bahamas to Newfoundland.
She was devoted to the city of Portland and championed many civic causes. She served as a trustee of the Portland Museum of Art and of the Maine Medical Center.
Throughout her life, she was an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Falmouth, becoming one of the first women in Maine to serve as senior warden of a parish and the first woman to serve on the vestry of her parish.
She was predeceased by her husband Alexander R. Fowler.
She is survived by her children Anne Fowler, Win Fowler, Ben Fowler, Ellen Fowler and Susan Fowler Valaitis, and their spouses; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., March 6 at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, 43 Foreside Road, Falmouth.
