PORTLAND — Charles Lindbergh “Lindy” Skerritt, 81, died Feb. 13 at St. Joseph’s Manor.
On July 24, 1927, he was born in Portland, son of William and Mary Elizabeth Skerritt.
He attended St. Dominic’s Grammar School and Cheverus High School.
In 1953 he married Dorothy Lorraine Place. They had four children together.
He joined the Portland Fire Department in 1948, where he worked for 28 years until his retirement in 1976. His work in fire prevention with Portland schools, and the development of “Sparky the Fire Dog” was an immense source of pride for him.
After his retirement from the fire department, he enjoyed working at Shaw’s Northgate at the deli counter.
His favorite pastimes included spending summers by the pool with his children and grandchildren, and sharing stories over the dinner table. Christmas Eve was a special time for him, and he hosted many celebrations over the years with family and friends.
He was community-minded, serving on non-profit boards and volunteering at St. Pius X Church.
He was predeceased by his sisters Grace, Gladys, Ruth, and Palmer, and his brother Richard.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Portland; children Mary Vankevich and her husband Peter of Ocracoke, N.C., Michael Skerritt and his wife Kathryn, of Portland, William Skerritt and his wife Patricia of Portland, Patricia Larsen and her husband Dale of Portland; grandchildren, Dan, Chris, Grace, Michael and Joe; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
