Nate Lavallee CAPE:
Cape Elizabeth’s Nate Lavallee, shown here on the left as he is about to pin Erskine Academy’s Sean Gary in the championship quarterfinals, won the state Class A wrestling championship at 285 pounds on Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center. He pinned all three of his opponents on his way to the title. He stopped Gary in 31 seconds. Next, he pinned Skowhegan’s Todd Steward in 3:32. In the finals, he dispatched Cony’s Shawn White at 0:56.

Smiley SCAR:
Scarborough’s Brian Smiley, shown here being turned on his back by Skowhegan’s Kaleb Austin, competed in Saturday’s Class A state wrestling championship at the Augusta Civic Center. Smiley, wrestling at 135 pounds, was pinned by Austin in his first match. He defeated Erskine Academy’s Kevin Lee in the consolation bracket by an 11-2 major decision, then was eliminated by Sanford’s Zachary Clarke in the consolation semifinals in a 13-9 decision.
