Equine legends visit library
Black Beauty lives at the end of Main Street and Pegasus takes wing from a pasture not far from Bonny Eagle High in a new, national-touring exhibit visiting the West Buxton Public Library. “The Literary Horse: When Legends Come to Life” will be on display at the West Buxton Public Library, 34 River Road, Buxton through Feb. 28.T he display features 65 photos of today’s horses and riders with quotations from the world’s great books.
According to the artist, equine photographer Vanessa Wright, “From Achilles’ weeping chargers to Don Quixote’s Rocinante, the horses of myth and literature are alive and thriving in our neighborhoods!”
Two local equestrians were selected to appear in the exhibit.
Meaghan Martin of Buxton, the teenage founder of Ribbons for Ribbons, a program through which she raises money for cancer research through competitive riding, is cast as Bradamant, the only female knight in the legends of Charlemagne.
Mona Jerome, director of Ever After Mustang Rescue in Biddeford, is pictured with a mustang, who reached a fairy-tale “happily ever after.”
This exhibit also extends beyond its images. Because it is hosted by the West Buxton Public Library, after touring the scenes of heroic horses and horse-people, visitors can trot on over to the shelves and jump into the books that follow their adventures. And because it features local equine and equestrian programs, visitors can contact the programs’ organizers and become riders, supporters, or volunteers.
