Geography bee winners

In the recent 2008 geography bee at Bonny Eagle Middle School, Veronica Druchniak took first place, with Caleb Porter runner-up and Tophe Thorne in third place.

Thirty students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades competed for the geography bee title. Participating were sixth-graders Austin Flanigan, Anna Niedermeyer, Max Salevsky, James Maxwell, Dustin Chandler, Kira Dumont, Colin Regan, Dylan Francis, Rosalie Thomas, and Mel Cropley; seventh-graders Ernest Cline, Tophe Thorne, Branon Redlon, Sierra Cooper, Becca Moss, Austin Lilly, Tony Payeur, Veronica Druchniak, Morgan Valliere and Shawna Turner; and eighth-graders Joe Belanger, Travis Harmon, Dan Cheney, Gabby Gowel, Adam Hicks, Dalton Culp, Tyler Nelson, Dan McCarthy, Caleb Porter and Hannah Pomerleau.

The geography bee was moderated by Assistant Principal Deb Howard. Bee organizer was Eric Curtis.

Taking care of its own

Through the Toy Box program, Buxton people and businesses donated food, clothes and gifts to 74 families with 153 children.

“They all got new jackets, hats, mittens and snow pants,” said Mia Dodge, Toy Box creator and organizer for 14 years.

Families also received bedding and board games – “Things to do as a family,” Dodge said.

Dodge said the number of families was up from 71 last year while the number of children decreased by one this year.

Donation boxes were located at churches, schools, libraries and businesses besides Town Hall.

Holidays stateside

Jeanette Fernstrom said last week her son-in-law, Spec. Vincent Certoma, has returned to the United States after duty with the U.S. Army in Iraq.

Certoma and his wife, Spec. Allison Certoma, are both stationed in Fort Bragg, N.C. The couple was married in August last year and he was deployed two weeks later.

Hunt on Legislative committee

Rep. Robert Hunt, D-Buxton, has been named to the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee in the 124th Legislature.
