PORTLAND — Robert S. Stevens, 82, of Portland, died Dec. 25 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
He was born in Madison on Sept. 24, 1926, a son of Carl T. and Beatrice N. (Smith) Stevens.
He graduated from Deering High School in 1944 at age 17.
After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served on a minesweeper in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
On June 18, 1948, he married the former Louise B. Arey of Westbrook.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1950, and his master’s degree in education from Boston University in 1956.
He worked as an educator and principal in Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
During summers off, he and his family lived on Little Diamond Island while he served as a captain on Casco Bay Lines. He also had his own fishing boat, the Early Dawn, and took private charters deep-sea fishing.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Louise, in 2005.
He is survived by his children, daughters Pamela S. Ohda of Franklin, N.C., and Marsha L. Stevens of South Portland, and son, Daniel W. Stevens of Cape Elizabeth; a brother, Daniel Stevens of Sebago Lake and Florida; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Interment will follow in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
