Adopt a hydrant
The Gorham Fire Department is asking the assistance of Gorham citizens, who have a fire hydrant on or near their property, to adopt the hydrant.
Citizens who volunteer would agree to clear the snow around the hydrant within eight hours of the end of a storm. The fire department asks that residents shovel a path from to road to the hydrant 3 to 4 feet wide and clear snow less than 4 feet from the hydrant.
Gorham Fire Department has more than 300 hydrants that are required to be shoveled after every storm. This requires a large expenditure of funds each storm for payroll and fuel costs. A department statement said it takes a minimum of 14 hours or more to clear snow from all the hydrants. Assistance from volunteers would help the department save money.
Those agreeing to adopt a hydrant are asked to call the office of Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre at 839-6762.
