As expected the Cape Elizabeth girls cross country team turned Saturday’s Class B State Championship meet into their own personal playground. The Capers scored just 36 points in a dominant win. Their closest competitor, Freeport, finished 80 points behind with 136. Greely was third with 117.
The rest of the finishing order was York in fourth (132) followed by Mount Desert Island (148), John Bapst (162), Ellsworth (167), Falmouth (185), Caribou (185), Presque Isle (209), Medomak Valley (255) and Leavitt (291).
Abby Mace of Maranacook, running as an individual, won the race with a time of 18:48. She was followed by Cape’s Emily Attwood (19:23). Third place was Brianne Dunn of Ellsworth (19:30). Cape’s Kelsey Barton was fourth (19:38) and Greely’s Tess Carley (19:46) rounded out the top five.
Cape’s other scorers were Rachel Nichols (11) who earned nine points for her finish. Catherine Tierney (13) picked up 11 points and Hannah Doss (14) added another 12 points for the Capers.
The Capers placed their top five runners in the top 14. All seven runners were inside the top 20.
The Cape Elizabeth boys finished second in their meet behind Greely. The Capers were 50 points behind the Rangers. Greely finished with 38 points and Cape had 88. Third place was Falmouth (105) followed by York (143), Yarmouth (164), Ellsworth (166), Caribou (180), Fryeburg Academy (224), Belfast (273), Mount Desert Island (280), Maranacook (291), Medomak Valley (300), Erskine Academy (314), Leavitt (340) and Winslow (384).
York’s Alex Moser won the race in 16:04. He was followed by Matt Rand of Cape (16:15), Mark McCauley of Greely (16:19), Sam Seekins of Erskine (16:25) and James LePage of Greely (16:33).
In addition to finishing third and fifth, Greely’s scorers took sixth, 11th and 14th. Cape’s other scorers were Chris Flathers (7), Gabe Stewart (13), Peter Brigham (36), Bobby Yokabaskas (39) and Chris Haller (40).
