This year the Maine Commission for Community Service will provide cash awards for organizations that want to develop community volunteer service projects in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Applications are now being accepted. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Nov. 23. Go online to www.maineservicecommission.gov/mlk_maine/ to download an application form and a copy of the grant rules. Service projects must be conducted on the Martin Luther King Day of Service, which will be held on Jan. 19, or the weekend prior.
The Martin Luther King Day of Service is an important way for Mainers to experience the significance of service, volunteerism and collaboration amongst their neighbors. The funding will allow participants to create and implement service projects that will not only impact their communities, but celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and his commitment to service, nonviolence and diversity.
Awards are open to all nonprofit organizations, state and local government agencies, schools and institutions of higher education. Recipients must plan a service project that engages a broad spectrum of the community as well as promote a spirit of inclusive collaboration among young and old, business and nonprofit, school and community, working and unemployed and newcomers and long-time residents.
